Thirteener #1
Chelle at Ms. Congeniality recounts in “Conversations with random strangers” a recent conversation at a coffee shop that illustrates the charm of small town life.
Thirteener #2
Dewey presents a book review of Einstein’s Dreams posted at The Hidden Side of a Leaf. The book is a series of vignettes. For example:
In one dream, people at higher altitudes aged more slowly because time moves more slowly the further away you get from the center of the earth. This causes people to live on top of mountains, sometimes with their houses on stilts.
Thirteener #3
Shelly Kneupper Tucker presents This Eclectic Life posted at This Eclectic Life, saying, “The post is a story of my adventures (and mis-adventures) with feng shui combined with a favorite memory of my mother.” Shelly has a theory about paper clutter:
I have a theory about the “paper buildup” in my office. I stack a tiny pile of papers beside my keyboard and those papers create spores. The draft from the air conditioner picks up those spores, wafts them aloft, and deposits them on other flat surfaces where new piles of papers grow. That’s the only way I can explain why my office is such a mess.
Thirteener #4
Jenny-up the hill presents Baby Gonzalez posted at Up the Hill Gang. It’s a heart-tugging post.
Thirteener #5
Carmen at Gone To Plaid provides us a “Weekend Update With Carmen” about the trials and tribulations of the dating life.
Thirteener #6
A Gentleman’s Domain discusses the season finale of THE AMAZING RACE in “The Race Was Amazing.”
During the final scenes, when all the teams are congratulating the winners . . . I suddenly realise that that’s it. No more teams, no more Phil explaining what a Road Block is, no more following the players through the airports of the world as they try to find a flight that will get them to Warsaw or Guam or wherever, half an hour before the others.
THE AMAZING RACE is my personal favorite reality show. So I could identify with the almost sad feeling of seeing it end for the season.
Thirteener #7
Polli at Polliwog’s Pond wrote about Mother’s Day, and I think her words will resonate with many mothers:
It’s a funny holiday for me. I never feel like I ‘deserve’ to be celebrated yet. Perhaps I feel I haven’t paid my dues. After all, my kids are not ‘grown’ and there is still the chance that I may fail miserably at this! Being a mother is, without a doubt, the hardest thing I have ever done. There is this constant ache of love and worry and guilt and excitement in my heart. From what I hear, that ache will never go away.
Thirteener #8
Stephanie presents Which Way Does Your Ceiling Fan Turn? posted at Stop the Ride! You’ll learn lots about how ceiling fans work - and which way the blades should turn during cool weather and warm weather.
Thirteener #9
Norma at Collecting My Thoughts tells us that “Sometimes I have trouble with English, too!“ Here’s an example:
“it goes without saying,” I know that means “I’m going to say something you’ll agree with, but I’m saying it anyway,” but . . . it’s still confusing to say you’re not going to say it and then you do.
Norma includes other sayings that we hear all the time but don’t stop to think how absurd they are.
Thirteener #10
Green Tuna from Tuna News tells us about a family reunion in Mama Bread:
they were explaining the whole Grandmother - Mother - Granddaughter concept, but he still seemed a little confused so they started again and just said, “Daughter - Daughter - Daughter.” Then he smiled and we all laughed and decided that technically they were absolutely right. We were all daughter - daughter - daughters.
Thirteener #11
Claire at A Little Piece of Me presents “A Counseling Question” for us to consider. It’s an intriguing “what if” question that really makes you think. Check it out.
Thirteener #12
Barbara at Tidbits and Treasures Tells how “Laughter is the Best Medicine” and it’s all about the Thursday Thirteen posts she’s been reading.
Thirteener #13

Welcome to the May 7, 2007 edition of THE THIRTEENER CARNIVAL. We’ve got some great reading for you today. If you would like to submit a post for next week’s carnival use the link to the right or the one at the end of the carnival. And if you would like to increase traffic to your blog, volunteer to host the carnival one week. It takes a little time to put it together, but it’s fun! Now, enjoy reading this week’s carnival entries.
Let’s get on with Thirteen Thirteeners
in no particular order
Thirteener # 1
Chicken Scratch shares her journey with connecting with her heritage after the loss of her mother.
Deconstructing Ellas, Deconstructing Bloodlines.
How is it that now that Mama is gone that I feel disconnected from being Greek? My DNA remains the same but the intangible connection to my extended family - especially family that lives overseas or across Canada - has weakened.
Thirteener # 2
Write From Karen presents
A Rough Ride posted at
Write From Karen, saying, “Biking our guts out. *grin*” The boys getting grounded has some twists and turns but turns out to be a bonding experience for the family.
There are some pretty good life lessons in parenting in there as well.
Thirteener # 3
Jessica The Rock Chick presents
Dirty Little Secrets posted at
Life is RANTastic!.
Jessica gives us a good read about how surprising it might be when we judge a book by it’s cover. Things may not be what they appear and the dirty little secrets might not be kept by who we expect at all.
Thirteener # 4
Jill presents
Mon cadavre exquis/ My sweet corpse posted at
Jill the Acadian/Jill l’Acadienne.
This is a little game/poetry/story I post like two week ago on my other blog. Most of you know me for my TT on www.live-your-live-and-smile.blogspot.com. This other blog is more artistic and show up my roots.
So my sweet corpse is a story written by you, through comments … On your mark , get set go!
Thirteener # 5
Friday’s Child presents
The Diary of a Tiny Baby posted at
Friday’s Child. Friday’s Child posts the diary of a developing fetus. “This is also a post of last year’s but I think it is worth reading.”
Thirteener # 6
Dewey reviews the novel
Einstein’s Dreams. Her review is at
The Hidden Side of the Leaf. She calls the book more of a series of vignettes rather than a novel.
Each short chapter is a dream he has, on different nights, about time. Some of the concepts of time in the dreams have clear connections to relativity, but others are downright whimsical.
Thirteener # 7
Kristin presents
The circus that is my town posted at
Off the wall thoughts of a relatively sane person, saying, “A rant on why the town I live in isn’t moving forward.”
Kristin rants about the marketability of her town, but they chose to use these historical moments to market instead:
Needless to say, there are a lot of marketable points to MC that should be able to bring more business in. However, here is what the city uses to market itself: 1)the movie version of the musical The Music Man was filmed here. The man who wrote the musical, Meredith Willson, was born and raised in MC. The movie was filmed 50 some-odd years ago, and to be honest, I had never seen it until we moved out here. 2) In 1934, JD Dillinger robbed a bank in MC. I don’t know all the details surrounding this, but the historical information is all over the walls of the library. They are honestly contemplating a weekend festival to celebrate this event. Not sure how that would go down, but a witness to the robbery said recently in our newspaper, The Globe-Gazette, that he would support such a celebration.
Thirteener # 8
Planck’s Constant writes about a horrific death of a baby at the hands of her mother with
Purple Ribbons in Bayonne. ‘Callous, stupid, and barbaric acts like this should not be happening in a civilized country.’
Thirteener # 9
Meg presents
My Favorite Picture posted at
Bad Homeschool Mom. A BEAUTIFUL picture and a touching post. Read it and I’m willing to bet that you will learn something.
The little boy in the photo above has the SZ form of Alpha 1. His little brother also has Alpha 1, but we don’t know which type, though we do know that so far he hasn’t been affected as seriously as Liam is *knock on wood*
It is wonderful and inspiring to read the writings of a person who knows and understands what really matters in life and how to ‘knock on wood’ even when things aren’t exactly like your would have chosen them to be.
Thirteener # 10
GP presents
Nurturing Naturally posted at
Fish Creek House - INNside Innkeeping, saying, “Whether it’s your business, your personal life, or your garden, nurturing is the key to nature”
From nurturing the horse that revitalizes and nurtures her to nurturing the plants that eventually grace her table and in return provide her with nutrition. GP enjoys and advises us on the cycles that are intrinsic in our relationships with nature.
Thirteener # 11
Kahri Lynn presents
Our Peculiar Life: 100 Things about me posted at
Our Peculiar Life. The title speaks for itself, an interesting list of who Kahri is! Thanks for sharing yourself with us Kahri!
Thirteener # 12
Amanda Harris presents
Grammar and Punctuation posted at
Make Money Online with The Blog World.
This is a blog full of really good advise on blogging. Here’s a gem she offers:
If you’re looking for a way to make your site a bit more popular, try reading it. I’ve noticed online that a lot of people don’t proof read their entries and they’re full of typos, spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes, and completely devoid of punctuation. No matter how good your design and content may be, if it can’t be read easily enough many people will simply give up.
While that seems obvious, I understand exactly what she is saying. I move on to another site if the writer makes me do all the work to understand the points being made. That’s just a taste of what Amanda offers. Read on ….
Thirteener # 13
Jenny presents
Tips for getting little hands to help posted at
the so called me. If you want to get some help in how to get your little ones to help out more around the house, you will want to read this!

The Crazy King of Clowns provides us with the Top 10 Answering Machine Messages posted at Infinitely CRAZY. Here’s a sample:
This is not an answering machine - this is a telepathic thought-recording device. After the tone, think about your name, your number, and your reason for calling…. And I’ll think about returning your call.
GP writes about Enduring Health at Fish Creek House - INNside Innkeeping. Check it out and learn about the importance of having “turquoise days.”
Stephanie at Stop the Ride! gives us her recipe for Homemade Buffalo Chicken Pizza. It sounds easy - and spicy - and delicious!
If you’re the parent of a young train enthusiast, then Mama Duck has everything you need to know about train birthday party ideas posted at Lil Duck Duck.
Jessica The Rock Chick visited the oral surgeon which resulted in a visit to the opthamologist to check on what she though was probably a stye. That’s just the beginning of Eyes Wide Open posted at Life is RANTastic! The visit turned out to be much more complicated that Jessica ever envisioned, and it made a proverb-believer out of her.
Jane at Cozy Reader found out some good news this week. Check it out.
Friday’s Child shares “MARY’S DREAM” with us at Friday’s Child. Although this post is from a long time ago, she wants everyone who reads her blog to see it. It’s the story of Mary, Jesus’ mother, and a dream she might have shared with Joseph. Maybe it will touch your heart, the way it touched Friday’s Child.

Official Thursday Thirteen Gear and other stuff
Welcome to the April 23, 2007 edition of the
Thirteen Thirteeners Carnival.
Please remember that Thursday Thirteen posts are not included in the Carnival.
Jessica The Rock Chick presents Ring My Bell posted at Life is RANTastic!, saying, “My life on Hysteria lane.”
Woah! So life for Edie Britt The Rock Chick on Hysteria Lane is a little like a soap opera Desperate Housewives.
Meanwhile, Edie is arriving at her house which is across the street from Lynette’s. She has been busy all day running errands. When the three women in the van see Edie drive by, they duck down and hope that she doesn’t notice them. Edie does see them and the sight makes her giggle. She waits until they sit upright and waves at them. (You know, just to make them crazy.)
Karen presents Breathing Easier posted at Write From Karen, saying, “There are times when moms know, they just know, something is not quite right with their children. This was one of those times.”
After days of knowing that something wasn’t right with her son, Karen tried remedies for his asthma that had worked in the past, but nothing was working this time. Even though she was being told that she was over reacting she KNEW something was wrong ….
So, they took an x-ray of his chest and there was indeed excess fluid in the lower part of his lungs. Only it wasn’t an asthma attack this time, but bacterial pneumonia. Luckily, we had caught it in the beginning stages so we could avoid the worst of it.
Tess Termulo presents Battle Scars posted at Prudence and Madness. This is a beautifully written essay on maneuvering through bad relationships and finding oneself in the process.
“My past relationships had been devastating. Yet, here I am, ready and waiting for the next one, which hopefully will be the last. In daring to be free from the hold of fear, I am proud of my battle scars.”
I hope you’ll take the time to go by and read this article. It’s a very good read.
Friday’s Child presents “THE GLORY OF A GIFT” posted at Friday’s Child. Friday’s Child offers a thoughtful article on the meaning of giving. She gives us the reasons people use for not giving and concludes that it’s not what you give, but that you give.
We feel joy when we give, because basically, we are satisfying a deep desire. In this sense, giving of ourselves for the betterment of the less fortunate is the cheapest and most effective mental therapy available today. To deny ourselves the joy of giving is to deny our basic needs.
The Crazy King of Clowns presents Chocolateism posted at Infinitely CRAZY.
What do you want to know about chocolate? It’s here, most anything you want to know. It’s enough to send us chocoholics into a coma!! Be careful when you go read it, The Crazy King of Clowns should be handing out Hersey Bars with this post!
Chocolate has over 500 flavor components, more than twice the amount found in strawberry and vanilla.
mom23guys1girl presents I Want to be sane with 4 kids in Enola: The Happiness Project posted at I Want to be sane with 4 kids in Enola and so she looks for the keys to happiness. Worth the read, go check it out.
Expressing my happiness seems easy once you are in the moment. It kind of goes with the Uncle quote above. Tell your friend, I’m having a great time…it sure is nice to get out for some grown-up time. Tell your sons, This banquet is lots of fun isn’t it…and look, you got this award and that award and we got this nice dinner and Nana, Gramps and Aunt Tricia are here. Gosh, this is fun.
Stephanie presents Vacation on a Budget posted at Stop the Ride!.
Stephanie gives some great tips on taking what looks like a lovely vacation for six (yes SIX) on a $1,000 budget! I’m looking forward to reading how it works out. She’s going to give a report when she returns from her trip.
Stephanie presents Car Farts posted at Adventures in the 100 Acre Wood. I admit, this wasn’t what I expected from the title. I was expecting the sputtering and spewing of a bad engine. Stephanie, or rather her children, found a whole new meaning to ‘car farts. HEH! You too can make your car fart!
David at Third World County says Live Long, So What?. He has found out that he COULD as in MIGHT live two hours longer for every hour of vigorous exercise. Those two hours don’t seem to interest him much ….
Sure, you say, I might have an “extra” hour to do these things as a result of “vigorous exercise”. Might. But I have those hours now, so why waste ‘em with time set aside for “vigorous exercise”?

Welcome to the April 16, 2007 edition of THE THIRTEENER CARNIVAL. This has been another fun time of reading what T13 members have submitted. We had more submissions than last week, but we were still a couple submissions short of having thirteen. So I randomly picked a couple blogs that participated in this past week’s Thursday Thirteen, and selected a post from each to add to the carnival.
You can go ahead and enter a post right now for next week’s carnival. Just use the submission form at the end of the carnival to submit a post for next week.
Now sit back and relax and enjoy this week’s carnival!
Jenny writes about toys that make noise in I hate noisy toys! posted at Pajama Mommy. She asks these questions:
What were the toy people thinking? Are they childless?
Haven’t we ALL wondered the same thing when we’ve heard toys that make such a racket, we want to toss it out the door.
GP from Fish Creek House presents Monday Menus.
“Most of us hit the ground running in the morning… i know i do. An innkeeper’s week of breakfasts for you /guests/family to be fit and fast. Enjoy!”
Shoshana presents Real Moms…Teach posted at Unseal My Lips. Shoshana was tagged to write a post about “real moms …..” Then she had to tag five others. Here’s a taste of “Real mom . . . teach.”
Real Moms teach. They teach their children that being generous makes you a strong person. Politeness is a virtue, and honesty does not equate with rudeness and selfishness.
Nancy Bond presents Only The Good #1 posted at Soliloquy. In “Only the Good” one looks at an online photograph and then finds ONLY the good in it. Nancy selected a photo of an old and tattered quilt. What a great idea!
Christina at tinalinatime teaches in a middle school. In Snooty Middle School Girls she describes an incident at school last week. I have worked with middle school kids before - and that’s why I’m an elementary school teacher now! Yea for how Christina handled herself in this situation!
Angelika writes about recent news events in Political Correctness posted at Angelika. All I can say if “Amen!” It’s a post that will certainly make you think.
TorAa planned a birthday trip from Oslo to Nice. Everything was planned - until life stepped in. He tells us about it in Papa goes travelling posted at TorAa Mirror. Despite some unplanned difficulties, the trip was made and he has the lovely photographs to document it.
Jenny gives us a humorous look at a possible solution to the Iraq War in Finally, the solution without 20,000 troops!! posted at Pajama Mommy. This joke has been making the rounds lately, but I’ll bet a lot of you haven’t seen it yet. As a southern girl, I loved it, and it’s always good to look for the humor in things.
Prudence at Prudence and Madness presents Passages: The Story. Prudence tells us that:
The Story is an article I wrote for my aunt who recently lost her husband. One of those life’s episodes when we learn that life is better spent loving than fearing death.
Lil Duck Duck presents some great 3rd Birthday Party Activity Ideas posted at Lil Duck Duck. Obviously Lil Duck Duck knows what she’s talking about and what to do to keep the little ones happy at a party.
Beth at Blue Star Chronicles has had a tough week, and she writes about it in It’s Been a Strange Week. So what do you do when your life is suddenly turned upside down?
If I haven’t learned anything else in my life, I have learned that things are rarely as they appear on the surface. I’ve learned that what gives every appearance of being a disaster can have marvelous results - even if it’s in the long run. I’ve learned that you have to roll with it and be willing to tough it out till you see what’s around the next bend in the road. There’s always another bend in the road.
Neila at Blog That Mommy tells us the story of a small child coming into the room wrapped in a wet towel in A Quiet Day at Home that turned out to be not-so-quiet. Where did the water come from, Neila wondered. The source of the water provides an amusing and stomach-turning tale that most mothers can identify with.

Welcome to the second edition of THE THIRTEENER CARNIVAL.
Last week we had LOTS of submissions and couldn’t include them all since we are limited to thirteen. I hope we didn’t scare you away from submitting because this week we only had seven submissions. So this week’s carnival highlights seven posts. Since there are only seven posts highlighted, please try to visit each one of them. That shouldn’t take too long, and there is some great writing in this week’s edition. Then next week, be sure to send in one of your non-T13 posts so we can be back up to thirteen posts.
Now let the carnival begin!
Sophisticated Writer has a terrific idea when she writes a Letter To 1995-Me posted at Confessions of a Sophisticated Writer. I like the idea so much, I intend to write a letter to my 1995 self. Here’s an exerpt from Sophisticated Writer’s post:
And it’s OK feeling like an outsider. You don’t belong where you think you “should”. You’re really pretty and smart and your nerdy, geeky and not-popular friends will give you a hard time later, but you’ll get over it.
GP presents Passover Miracles posted at Fish Creek House - INNside Innkeeping. Since I took part for the first time in a Seder meal this past Thursday, I especially enjoyed reading this post that described some of the symbolism of the meal. She ends with a great recipe for a Passover Fruit Compote that sounds delicious!
An Ordinary Mom wrote In This Skin … In This Present Day Skin in which she talks about many aspects of her life and her acceptance of it. Here’s a glimpse:
In this skin I am learning to love all of its wrinkles, stretch marks and imperfections … they show me where I have been and they help motivate me to not let them exponentially grow through satisfying my chocolate craving too often.
In this skin I am learning to say no and to not feel guilty from doing so.
Karen writes about her two sons and the last quarter of the school year in The Game of Life posted at Write From Karen. It’s such a tender and well written look at the changes children go through during the school year. Karen, I think you will go places as a writer! All moms and dads who read it will most likely identify with your emotions and observations.
Friday’s Child shares Living With Regrets posted at Friday’s Child. She writes about regrets that most of us have, and then she write something that really stuck with me:
Regrets are as personal as fingerprints
Now isn’t THAT the truth! Go read the entire post. You’ll be glad you did.
In Paying Someone to Raise Your Child at Renaissance Blogger, Eric writes of parents who pay someone else to teach their children to use good manners, to shop wisely, to ride a bicycle and other skills that parents used to be responsible for teaching their children. It’s a thought-provoking post. Are parents delegating their responsibilities to outsiders, or are they simply using good time management? Check it out.

Welcome to the premiew edition of THE THIRTEENER CARNIVAL! In this issue we will highlight thirteen non-T13 posts from thirteen Thursday Thirteeners. The Thirteener Carnival will be published each Monday morning. The requirements for inclusion in the carnival are:
- The post must be a NON-weekly Thursday Thirteen list. Since we read each other’s Thursday Thirteen list each Thursday, we want to read something else for the carnival. This is a way to get to know other sides of our T13 friends.
- The blog must be part of the Thursday Thirteen family.
- The post must be appropriate and something of general interest.
We had many submissions, and we can only include thirteen of them. It was so hard to chose which posts to include. We pretty much randomly chose and many wonderful post were not included. If you submitted a post, and it isn’t included, please submit one for next week’s carnival.
If you have a blog and a few hours to spend putting together a THIRTEENEER CARNIVAL, please send an email to thurs13 (at) gmail (dot) come. Hosting is fun, but it DOES take some time to put it together. The carnival will be crossposted on your blog and here at the Thursday Thirteen hub. So let us know if you’re interested.
Here’s your job as a reader: Do your best to visit all thirteen highlighted
posts and read them and comment on each one. If you can’t visit all thirteen, then visit as many as you can. Feel free to trackback to this post if you are a Thirteener and link to this post in your post. Now, on with the carnival!
Welcome to the April 2, 2007 edition of The Thirteener Carnival.
Jenny reads for us all in Sunday Morning Lessons, Week 2 posted at Me & My Musings. Jenny reads the New York Times each week, and then writes about what she learned. She covers a wide variety of topics.
Mama Duck has some ideas for putting the energy of toddlers to good use in Using toddler energy for a cleaner house… posted at Lil Duck Duck. How great is this! Toddlers have so much energy and at that age they love to help. It just a matter of finding things they can do that actually help. Mama Duck has some great ideas that should work perfectly.
Kristi presents You Just Never Know… posted at Writing My Life Away. She says you just never know where ideas for articles come from. She went to a cooking class and came away inspired with ideas for new articles. Check it out!
Sanni presents Cyber Cruise: Dominican Republic posted at Coffee 2 go. Sannie gives a fantastic tour of the Dominican Republic:
Some of the world´s finest cigars are made here from Cuban-seed tobacco brought by Cuban expatriates after the Revolution. In addition to rum, Mama Juana (called liquid Viagra), hand-rolled cigars, the Dominican Republic cultivates heavenly coffee beans. Larimar, the Dominican version of turquoise mined near the Haitian border, is another bargain.
I started on this cruise and then got sick. After enjoying the Dominican leg of the trip, I think I’ll try to catch back up with them!
Jon Tillman presents My Politics & My Philosophy posted at JONTILLMAN.COM. Jon straightens out his critics who have referred to him as a socialist. It’s not about putting a label on it, but more about what his core beliefs are. He goes on to explain. Check it out.
Friday’s Child presents While Watching TV posted at Friday’s Child saw a program made her nostalgic for a time when our lives were not so well planned and our friends and acquaintances were more diverse.
Some people contend that they are happiest when we stick to “our own kind” in developing friendships. Little do they know that persons who wears blinders of this kind will never experience the enthrallment of having as companions or friends such colorful and often vividly articulate individuals.
TC presents The Sounds of My Life posted at Ever After . . . My Way. TC shares a very well-written and pleasant peek into her home.
Nancy Bond presents Soliloquy: Masquerade posted at Soliloquy.. Beautiful poetry!!
GP presents I Made it Through the Rain posted at Fish Creek House - INNside Innkeeping, saying, “Whether it’s business or sport, passion and perseverance will keep you on the right path.”

Susan Helene Gottfried presents Susan’s Book Talk: Two Reading Contests posted at West of Mars — the Meet and Greet, saying, “A post about two neat reading contests.”
Marcia presents Tumbled Words: Only The Good posted at Tumbled Words, saying, “. . . So, please see only the good in this photo. . . There is always something positive to be found, even if it is only that the world is still here. With no further adieu or mouthiness. . . My first Only the Good.”

Note: The THIRTEENER CARNIVAL has been postponed until next Monday. Because over half of the submissions were Thursday Thirteen lists, we realized that we did not communicate very well that the only submissions were to be NON-Thursday Thirteen lists. There is a reason for that requirement: Since we read each other’s T13 lists each Thursday, we wanted to use NON-T13 posts so that we can get to know each other outside of the T13 lists. You can submit non-T13 posts to the blog carnival for inclusion in next week’s carnival.
